Recoleta Cemetery: Evita’s Tomb, Tours and Opening Hours

Updated October 28, 2026 · 5 min read

Marble mausoleums lining a narrow passage beneath leafy trees in Recoleta Cemetery

Allow about two hours for Recoleta Cemetery. The City of Buenos Aires currently lists tourist visits daily from 9am to 5pm; verify the official page before travelling because access can change. Evita is buried in the Duarte family vault, not beneath a monument bearing the name Perón.

Opening hours and entry planning

The official city cemetery page distinguishes general visits from tourist access and lists tourist hours as 9am–5pm every day. Arrive well before closing: the site covers roughly five hectares and contains more than 4,500 vaults. More than 90 have national historic-monument status.

Opening information is not the same as a guaranteed admission time. Holidays, maintenance or ceremonies can affect access, so check again on the day. The booking page, not this article, is decisive for any paid entry or tour inclusion.

Finding Evita’s tomb

Look for the Duarte family name. The vault is modest compared with some neighbouring mausoleums, and the narrow lanes make it easy to walk past. A map at the entrance is useful; a guide adds the political and family history that a nameplate cannot explain.

The two-hour English-language Recoleta Cemetery tour covers the art, architecture and well-known mausoleums, including Eva Perón’s. A second English tour focused on stories and symbolism also lasts two hours.

Guided or independent?

Go independently if you mainly want the architecture and Evita’s tomb. Choose a tour if names from Argentine history mean little to you: without context, rows of ornate vaults can blur together. Two hours is enough for a first visit without turning the cemetery into a rushed checklist.

Our recommendation

For an English-speaking first visit, take the two-hour guided Recoleta Cemetery tour. Independent visitors should download or collect a map and still reserve about two hours.
