San Telmo Sunday Market and Old Quarter: A Self-Guided Walk
Updated October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
Visit on Sunday for the antiques fair and street atmosphere; choose a weekday or Saturday for a calmer look at the neighbourhood and indoor market. The Sunday fair and Mercado de San Telmo are separate places with different schedules.
A simple route
Start near Plaza de Mayo and walk south along Defensa. Continue to the covered Mercado de San Telmo at Defensa and Carlos Calvo, then Plaza Dorrego, and finish towards Parque Lezama if you still have energy. Allow about two hours without long food or museum stops.
The official antiques fair at Plaza Dorrego runs on Sundays from 10am to 5pm throughout the year. The covered market is a food-and-antiques hall; the sources we checked list 9am to 8pm at weekends and shorter hours on weekdays. Check again before visiting, especially on holidays or in poor weather.
What changes on Sunday
Sunday brings the largest concentration of stalls, crafts and street performance, but also the thickest crowds. Keep valuables secure in busy stretches and do not expect every object along Defensa to be an antique. Plaza Dorrego specialises more strongly in antiques; surrounding streets mix crafts, clothing and souvenirs.
| Visit | Best for | Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Full fair atmosphere | Crowds and slower walking |
| Saturday | Indoor market and easier cafés | No main Sunday antiques fair |
| Weekday | Architecture and quieter streets | Fewer stalls |
Guided or independent?
This route is easy to walk independently. Consider the San Telmo and La Boca food walk only if food tastings and a guide’s context are central to your day; it is not a substitute for the Sunday antiques fair.
Our recommendation
Go independently on Sunday morning, reach Plaza Dorrego before the busiest middle of the day and leave time for the covered market. Choose the guided food walk on another occasion if you want a structured tasting experience.
